Elaina and Steve's Story

Hockey fans execute flawless country wedding

Elaina Towns and Steve Heffernan met at an athletic tournament and their shared love of sports continues to play a huge role in their relationship. In fact, when Steve proposed on November 27th, 2014, Elaina arrived home from work to see a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey laid out on the bed. “The Leafs are our favourite team,” she explains. “The jersey number was 27, which is a combination of both of our sports numbers, 16 and 11. In the name bar at the top of the jersey was printed ‘Will You Marry Me’. He was down on one knee, I was shocked and excited, of course I said yes and from the day on we got busy planning our perfect wedding.”

The couple grew up in the country and decided right away to plan a country-casual affair. “We wanted to do all the planning and decorating ourselves while enlisting the help of our family and friends,” explains Elaina. They were married at the church where she had received all of her sacraments growing up and continues to attend, and afterwards headed over to her sister’s farm for the reception.

“We chose simple dresses for the girls, all the same colour and same style with varying lengths which we let them decide, and the groomsmen all wore dark jeans with shirts and vests. The common denominator in the whole wedding party was that everyone sported cowboy boots.” The wedding party and guests dined and danced inside a rented tent, surrounded by hay bales, rustic wood, chalk boards, old ladders, mason jars and burlap.

“Our girls carried hydrangeas with burlap flowers mixed in and the boutonnieres were made of wheat. Instead of numbering our tables they all were all named after the title of a country song. We picked the songs based on who was sitting at each table as they were songs we could relate to those people,” she says, adding that the guests knew the order that they were to approach the buffet when their song played.

Several of the couple’s friends play in a country band called Keene Country and graciously performed throughout the wedding night. “The dance floor was full all night long and our guests truly enjoyed the evening. We were so glad we could make our true country hoedown come to life,” Elaina says. Some special touches that played a part in the couple’s big day was the gift of a hand-built wooden bench from Elaina’s father. The guests signed their names and well wishes onto the bench, and the father of the bride later sealed it. Now the bench sits in the couple’s front hall.

“Another thing that really stood out was that I arrived to the church in my dad’s big transport truck that I used to love riding in with him as a child,” she adds. With catering by Jesse’s Tap and Grill in Ennismore and photos by Katie Ellement Photography, the bride says that her big day turned out just as she envisioned. “I wouldn’t change a thing about my wedding day. It represented Steve and I perfectly, and the guests all had a great time.”
